Bitdefender software was originally developed by SOFTWIN and sold as AVX (Antivirus Expert) from 1996 until 2001, when its name was changed. In 2007, SOFTWIN spun off Bitdefender.^[4]

Consumer products[edit]

Bitdefender's Internet of things device protection solution is called Bitdefender BOX. The box is a router designed to protect smart home products and Internet of Things devices by blocking malicious internet traffic. It is available on both Windows and Mac.

Bitdefender offers a cloud-based security solution with anti-malware and anti-theft capabilities for Android and iOS users that is called Bitdefender Mobile Security.

Business products[edit]

For businesses, the company markets the Bitdefender GravityZone for Enterprise Security. It includes Self-configuring kits for deployment from desktop to datacenter to cloud, software that secures physical, virtual and cloud-based endpoints, and software that uses a Network of malware data to stay updated.^[5] Its software product for small businesses looking for simple security called Bitdefender GravityZone Business Security.

Bitdefender Antispam NeuNet[edit]

Bitdefender Antispam NeuNet,^[6] is an antispam filter trained by the Bitdefender Antispam Lab on a series of spam messages, so that it learns to recognize new spam by perceiving its similarities with the messages it has already examined.

B-HAVE[edit]

In May 2006 Bitdefender developed a new technology, B-HAVE, to reduce dependency on virus signatures through proactive detection of unknown threats. This technology is based on a behavioral analysis in a virtualized environment.^[7]

Active Virus Control[edit]

Bitdefender introduced Active Virus Control in August 2009. This technology continuously monitors each program (specific processes) running on the PC as it executes, and it notes any malware-like actions. Each action is scored and, when a given threshold is reached, the process is reported as harmful.

FuTON Technology[edit]

In its 2014 version, the company claimed to feature a new technology called 'FuOTON Technology', which it says visibly improves computer speed and performance by gradually adapting to each PC.

Content filtering technologies[edit]

Content filtering technologies have been developed to filter raw online content and are applicable and used in antispam, anti-phishing, web filtering, scanning of spam and social networks. They facilitate the creation of signatures to proactively detect never-before-seen malicious files.

Machine learning[edit]

The company claims that Bitdefender is using cloud-based machine learning to identify new malware, malicious URLs and other online threats by processing and analysing big data to obtain behavioral patterns and predict future advanced threats.

Support[edit]

In May 2009, customers criticized Bitdefender's support service for lack of responses.^[8] Bitdefender responded by saying they were aware of the problems, and that they would take steps to solve it. They attributed the problem to an unexpectedly high surge in customers.^[8] Currently, the company's website claims that support is available 24/7 on telephone, email, LiveChat, and an online knowledge base.^[9]

Trojan.FakeAlert.5[edit]

On 20 March 2010, computers running Bitdefender under 64-bit versions of Windows were affected by a malfunctioning update which classified every executable program as well as dll files as infected. These files were all marked as 'Trojan.FakeAlert.5' and were moved into quarantine. This action led to software and systems malfunctions that affected users around the world.^[10] Bitdefender representatives announced the removal of the faulty update and a workaround for the users affected,^[11] except for those using the 2008 version.^[12]

Asus AiSuite incompatibility[edit]

Bitdefender is incompatible with Asus AiSuite2 and Asus AiSuite3, a motherboard optimization suite of software bundled with Asus motherboards which enables automatic overclocking, power tuning and fan control. Bitdefender claims that the incompatibility is due to 'NDIS Asus driver (WinpkFilter LightWeight Filter), which prevents the installation of some Bitdefender files'.^[13]

Antivirus software maker Bitdefender has released a free adware-removal tool for Windows PCs. The Bitdefender Adware Removal Tool 'eliminates annoying apps, adware, toolbars and other browser add-ons,' claims a company press statement, but also 'provides complete protection against malicious programs that can hijack computers.'

We're not sure how it does the latter, since adware-removal tools are typically much less robust than full-fledged antivirus software. The Bitdefender press statement admits as much, adding: 'The tool does not replace a security solution, which should be installed and updated on all Internet-connected devices.'

However, we found that the tool does interact with another company's antivirus software, albeit benignly. That's something no adware-removal tool should do.

In a quick test, we downloaded and ran the Bitdefender Adware Removal Tool, a portable application of only 44 megabytes that doesn't require installation. It features Bitdefender's clean, modern interface and quickly scanned our Windows 7 PC for adware, apparently finding nothing over the course of about 10 minutes.

Running the Bitdefender Adware Removal Tool suddenly woke up Sophos Endpoint Security and Control, our normally sleepy antivirus solution. As the Bitdefender tool scanned, the Sophos software alerted us to the presence of at least two pieces of adware or other potentially unwanted programs, moving them into quarantine and then, just as mysteriously, moving them out.

At first, we thought that Sophos might be detecting the Bitdefender tool as adware, but the latter happily continued to scan as Sophos made up its mind about what it had quarantined. To compare the Bitdefender Adware Removal Tool to the adware-removal market leader, we ran Malwarebytes Anti-Malware on the first computer. Its scan took more than twice as long as Bitdefender's, but while Bitdefender found nothing, Malwarebytes found 10 pieces of adware or other potentially unwanted programs on the same computer ('none of them malicious,' the software noted).

Nor did Malwarebytes Anti-Malware, which is renowned for not interfering with installed antivirus software, trigger Sophos to move things into quarantine. (The Bitdefender Adware Removal Tool did so again when we ran it a second time.) Malwarebytes did, however, suggest a system reboot to finish the adware-removal process; such a step could be viewed as more intrusive, but also as more effective.

We told Bitdefender about the unusual behavior, which the company quickly looked into.
'Our investigation shows that Sophos actually detects the files that are unpacked (i.e extracted) by Bitdefender and deletes them before we get to process them,' a Bitdefender spokesman told us. 'It breaks our scan process halfway. What the user sees is the files being deleted by Sophos, although they would have been detected by us.'
'We recommend that you temporarily disable the antivirus solution during the test,' the spokesman added. 'Disconnect the PC from the Internet, and then disable the antivirus for the duration of the scan. If your antivirus is unable to detect the threats by itself, chances are that it isn't working properly anyway.'

The Malwarebytes company recently released a full-fledged antivirus program, confusingly called Malwarebytes Anti-Malware Premium. That may have prompted Bitdefender, long a leader in the antivirus field, to challenge Malwarebytes on its historical turf, but Bitdefender may have left a little too much of its 'real' antivirus software in its adware-removal tool.

Without a detailed evaluation, we can't tell if the Bitdefender Adware Removal Tool is better or worse than Malwarebytes Anti-Malware or, for that matter, ADWCleaner or CCleaner. But on at least one of our systems, it did clash with a true antivirus product.
